Fiji Women’s Basketball team through to semis after defeating Tonga 75-46

The Fiji Women’s Basketball team are through to the semi finals after defeating Tonga 75-46 at the Pacific Games this afternoon.

Fiji coach Earl Hughes says they started off slowly with a 8-0 lead in the first quarter.

Hughes says they eventually got their act together, ran their systems and came back to win with a very healthy margin.

He says now they are in prep mode for the Cook Islands who they will face in the semi final.

Fiji led 35-24 at half time before extending their lead further to 52-39 in the third quarter.

Mikaelar Mendez won player of the match scoring 15 points, getting 7 rebounds and providing 3 assists.

Meanwhile, the Fiji Men’s Basketball team are straight through to the semi finals on Friday where they will play the winner of the game between PNG and New Caledonia.

Team Fiji Archery finished fourth in their Olympic qualifiers today.

Team Fiji Archery coach, George Fong says they still have another chance to qualify for Paris.

The freestyle, butterfly, backstroke and medley relays for swimming are at 7.30 tonight.

Coming up this evening, Fiji has a chance to add some medals to their tally with our women taking on Samoa in the Rugby League 9s bronze playoff at 6pm while the men will play Samoa in the Rugby League 9s gold final at 8pm.

Fiji is currently 14th on the standings with 4 silver and 2 bronze medals.

New Caledonia still leads with 19 gold, 15 silver and 21 bronze while Australia is in second with 13 gold, 10 silver and 3 bronze.
