Fiji Televison Limited said they cannot show some big rugby matches on Sky Pacific because they do not have the rights and there is a lack of sponsorship.
This is after concerns were raised on why Fiji Televison Limited is not showing big rugby matches like England vs New Zealand last weekend and England vs South Africa this weekend on Sky Pacific.
Head of Content and Production, Tanya Waqanika said most of the rights of these matches have been sold to other broadcasters in the Pacific by the rights holders.
Waqanika said sponsorship also plays a big part of securing these rights.
She said if the sponsors can commit a certain amount, it makes it easier to bid at a price that is affordable.
According to Waqanika the other reason is also they have bigger players in the Pacific who have deeper pockets to outbid any Fiji broadcaster from securing compelling sporting contents.
She also said the prices of these program gets too competitive that it will not get Fiji TV its return of investment if they went into a bidding war.
She added they cannot reveal how much it costs to air a particular rugby match due to the confidentiality clauses.
Waqanika only said that it costs lots and lots of money and it is also paid in US dollars.
