The government is yet to comment on why Fiji Television Limited is only granted 6 monthly extensions for its broadcast licence.
The board of Fiji TV has announced that its existing television broadcast license has been extended by the Minister for Communications,Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum for a further six month period with effect from 30th June, 2014.
The board states that in a letter to Fiji TV, Sayed-Khaiyum said that until further notice of any additional terms and conditions, including spectrum allocation, that may be prescribed, Fiji TV shall continue to broadcast under the terms and conditions contained in its existing licence for the extended period.
In a statement released by the government in June last year, it said that Fiji Television Limited had asked for its broadcasting licence to be extended for another six months as the company was undertaking a restructure.
In a letter to Sayed-Khaiyum, the Chairman of Fiji TV, Padam Lala said that Fiji TV was undergoing a restructuring process, which would be completed in a few weeks.
Lala had said last June that at that stage of the restructure, Fiji TV and its ultimate parent company, Fijian Holdings Limited, was content with an extension of Fiji TV broadcasting licence to the maximum of six months.
Fijivillage has sent questions to Communications Minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and Permanent Secretary for Information, Sharon Smith-Johns to clarify why only six monthly extensions are being granted for Fiji TV’s broadcast license.
