Fiji Pine Limited has successfully resolved a long-standing claim of Mataqali Tavuitolu of Nalotawa, in Ba however the total payout amount has not been revealed.
It has just been said to be a large sum of money.
The claim was made by members of the Mataqali way back in 2007 regarding the pine stumpage money that they were supposed to have received from areas overplanted by Fiji Pine Limited on their land.
Apart from land rent royalties and premiums, Fiji Pine Limited gives Mataqali owners stumpage money from every pine tree planted on their leased land.
Speaking on behalf of the Mataqali, Atunaisa Naura thanked Fiji Pine for coming to an amicable solution with the Mataqali and their grievances, saying that the gesture showed them Fiji Pine is now in a better position to resolve critical issues as such.
He says the funds due would pay for some immediate Mataqali needs like education, housing and other necessities.
Fiji Pine Group Executive Chairman, Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure met with members of the Mataqali in Nanuku Village to discuss the issue and establish a constructive approach to address the 17-year-old grievance.
Mataqali Tavuitolu and Fiji Pine had undergone years of dialogue and negotiations on the issue, and after careful consideration of all parties' interests, they have now reached an amicable resolution.
Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure says they are delighted to have reached a resolution with Mataqali Tavuitolu of Nanuku Village.
He says this agreement reflects their commitment to fair and equitable practices, sustainable forestry management, and mutual respect for the communities in which they operate.
Ratu Rakuita says they commend the constructive approach taken by Mataqali Tavuitolu throughout this process.
He says their co-operation and engagement have been instrumental in achieving a mutually beneficial outcome for all parties involved.
