Storing pharmaceutical and biomedical supplies will now be made easier and will be sufficient after the opening of the new Rua warehouse in Vatuwaqa, Suva.
While speaking during the opening of the warehouse at the Fiji Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Service warehouse, Minster for Health Doctor Atonio Lalabalavu says this was funded with approximately $1.9 million by the World Bank Group.
Dr Lalabalavu says this was part of the COVID-19 assistance package brought forward by the previous government and the World Bank.
He says this will house most of the biomedical and other equipment.
The Minister also highlighted the opening of the Medical Wastes Incinerator at the Naboro Landfill which aims to strengthen Fiji's response to COVID-19, including disease detection and health system strengthening, improving healthcare waste management and providing technical and operational assistance for the project, including staff recruitment and financial management.
He says the incinerator is also expected to modernize the Ministry’s handling of medical waste, ensuring safer disposal and minimizing public health risks.
He says the incinerator can handle 200 to 250kg of waste per burn, meeting the needs of our healthcare facilities in the Central Division which can promote best waste management practices and environmental stewardship.
Meanwhile, World Bank Acting Country Manager Suzy Yoon says this warehouse will be an essential part of ensuring no shortage of pharmaceutical needs for families and communities.
