The Fiji Men’s 7s side survived a scare from Papua New Guinea in the Pacific Games gold medal semi final to win 24-10 and book a showdown with Samoa in the gold medal final later tonight.
PNG surprised Fiji scoring the first two tries of the game with both conversions missing to lead 10-0.
Fiji pulled one unconverted try back at the stroke of halftime to trail 10-5.
PNG led 10-5 at the break.
The Fijians regrouped and came back stronger in the second spell to score 3 tries through Ropate Rere, Iliavi Nasori and a penalty try.
The PNG side had themselves to blame as discipline cost them having two players yellow carded in the second half which Fiji took advantage of.
Fiji will take on Samoa at 9 tonight.
Meanwhile, the Fiji Women’s 7s team defeated Tonga 44-0 in the semi final and will play PNG in the Women’s 7s gold medal final at 8.12 tonight.
