The Fiji Football Referees Association celebrated their 70th Anniversary acknowledging the invaluable contributions of its patrons in shaping the sport in the country.
Chief guest Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad says football in Fiji owes much to the dedication and integrity of their referees.
He says despite the many challenges over the years, the Association has thrived because of the dedication of its pioneers in ensuring fairness and integrity both on and off the field.
Professor Prasad says figures like Ahmed Hussein, Ram Indarjit, Hari Raj Naicker, Mahendra Singh, and Samay Chandra have continued to build on that legacy, ensuring the growth and integrity of our refereeing community.
Professor Prasad reflected on his experiences growing up watching football, acknowledging the influence of iconic referees.
He says he may not have been the best soccer player, but he was always a passionate fan, closely watching the referees for their wisdom and fairness.
Prof Prasad says they are also fortunate to have two distinguished gentlemen, Justice Sir Moti Tikaram and former President of Fiji, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, who have been long-serving patrons of the FFRA.
He says their commitment and guidance have been instrumental in shaping the Association into what it is today.
Professor Prasad highlighted the improvements in referee welfare, noting that they are now much better compensated and equipped than in the past.
Professor Prasad says looking to the future, he is proud of the achievements of Fijian referees, particularly their increasing recognition on the international stage as a beacon of hope.
