A Memorandum of Understanding was signed today by the Fiji Corrections Service and the Lau Care Committee to minimize the number of offenders from the Lau Province.
Assistant Commissioner Fiji Corrections Service, Salote Panapasa says last year there were 190 offenders from the Lau Province arrested from different divisions around the country. 155 of these Lauans were convicted last year.
She says this year the number has increased to 198.
Chairman of Lau Provincial Council, Ilisoni Taoba says the MOU will enable the Corrections Service to work with the Lau Provincial Council in setting up programs that will enable offenders and ex-offenders to live a better life when they are released from prison.
The Lau Care Network is a committee that deals with setting up programs to help offenders get back to their feet when they are released from prison.
The Lau Care Network was setup last year.
