Fiji Cancer Society Clinical Nurse, Karolina Tamani says there is an increase in breast cancer cases and this includes men and women as they recorded approximately 300 cases yearly.
Tamani highlighted these statistics during the fijivillage Straight Talk with Vijay Narayan earlier this week.
She says breast cancer in men is also on the rise after they have received several cases with almost similar symptoms between women and men.
She says they have been reaching out to people, and a platform like fijivillage Straight Talk allows them to share information so that individuals can come forward if they have symptoms.
The Clinical Nurse says women are coming forward for screening compared to a few years ago when some women decided to stay home and seek herbal help for treatment.
She adds they have also been advocating the faith-based organisations and tertiary institutions on what to know about cancer and what are the symptoms so that if a person notices a change in their body they can come forward.
Stage 4 breast cancer survivor, Mele Koroi says she was diagnosed with stage one cancer in 2012 when she consulted a doctor for pain under her right breast for almost three to four months.
Koroi says a biopsy was conducted which confirmed that the lumps in her breast were cancerous but went to seek other options rather than medical care.
She further says she had very little knowledge of cancer and all she knew was that cancer kills.
She adds that she was blank and had negative thoughts after receiving the news however her husband supported her to seek medical assistance.
