The Fiji Cancer Society is paying for the allowances of doctors and nurses who are doing cancer surgeries at the CWM Hospital on Saturdays in an effort to assist the Hospital in clearing surgical backlogs.
Permanent Secretary for Health, Doctor James Fong says this is being done as 4 of the 8 surgical theatres are not in operation right now as they require a change in the air conditioning units and some extra electrical and ceiling works.
He says in a bid to handle the strain and remove the need to do surgeries at the CWM Hospital, teams have also been doing surgeries at Sigatoka and Rakiraki Hospitals.
Dr. Fong says he will be meeting with the team on Tuesday to understand the extent of the renovation work needed and also know by when the surgical theatres will be back in operation.
Fiji Cancer Society President, Makrava Wilson says they have spent almost $10,000 for 36 surgical procedures since December last year.
