Fiji Airways has stated that it respects the diversity of views surrounding the airline’s Rotuma Day Trip Package.
The airline says the package has been prepared with the District Officer Rotuma’s Office, as the official authority on the island dealing with external requests.
This follows concerns raised by some people that the day trip to Rotuma will destroy the culture of Rotumans.
The spokesperson for Fiji Airways says the entire tour is controlled, and all ‘on-the-island’ elements of the package, including the mandatory mamasa ceremony and the tour spots, have been determined and assigned by island authorities themselves.
The airline says particular care has been taken to ensure all relevant protocols for visiting the island are strictly followed.
The local guides leading the tour have been approved by island authorities, the revenue from the package is remitted to all parties participating in the package every week and even the refuse generated from the trip is gathered and brought back on the return flight.
Fiji Airways confirms that only a limited number of packages are available per flight, which operates once a week (Saturdays), and that Day Trip Package flights will end on November 28th.
