A family is mourning a double tragedy after the loss of twin daughters in a drowning incident on Thursday morning on Malolo Island in the Mamanuca group.
The two victims aged 1 year 11 months were playing outside their home in the presence of their 32-year-old mother.
However, later the mother went to do some laundry leaving the twins, when they allegedly wandered off to a nearby pond where the tragic incident took place.
When their mother returned and found the two missing, she went in search for the two and found them floating in the pond.
The two were conveyed to the Yanua Nursing Station and later to the Lautoka Hospital where the twins were pronounced dead on arrival.
The post mortem was conducted yesterday whereby it has been confirmed the cause of death was drowning.
The current drowning death toll stands at 5 compared to 4 for the same period last year.
Investigation in regards to the drowning of the twin sisters is continuing.
