Family life education to become mandatory

Family Life Education is in the process of becoming a mandatory subject from next year.

It is currently being taught in more than 100 secondary schools in the country.

According to the project officer for family life in Fiji, Penisoni Naupoto, it took 3 years to write the policy and it was presented to the Ministry of Education for endorsement last year.

He said the need for such a subject to be made compulsory is to create awareness amongst the students to know their rights and information on reproductive health.

They are progressing in making it compulsory at Form 3 and Form 4 levels and are already included in their internal assessments.

Naupoto added that the major challenges they face in the implementation are that of allocation of time for the subject as well as classification of which department or subject it falls under.
