Sei Kalini Tarusila, the wife of Qualified Firefighter Peceli Maisuva who died after a short illness in October while serving at Levuka Fire Station recieved $10,000 from the National Fire Authority.
This was through a compassionate policy that provides financial support to the families of firefighters who die in the line of duty, while still employed by the organization.
Under this policy, NFA’s medical insurer offers a medical benefit of $10,000 to the next of kin.
NFA CEO Puamau Sowane says they are immensely proud of the bravery and dedication shown by their firefighters every day.
Sowane says this policy is one way they can express their gratitude and ensure that their families are supported in the difficult times following their loss.
He says this is in line with the National Fire Authority’s policy, which aims to ease the financial burden on the families of its fallen members.
The NFA CEO says this initiative, which began in 2022, is part of their broader effort to recognize the dedication and sacrifice of their firefighters, who risk their lives daily to protect the community.
He says it was first implemented in 2022 after the tragic passing of a firefighter.
Sowane says in 2023, 2 more firefighters tragically lost their lives while serving with NFA.
He says so far this year, 4 firefighters have passed away and each of their families has been given the $10,000 benefit to help ease their loss.
Sowane says to date, a total of $70,000 has been distributed through this policy, which reflects the NFA's investment in honouring and compensating the families of its fallen heroes.
He says the NFA remains deeply committed to its staff and their families, recognizing their invaluable contributions to the organization and the community and will continue to stand by its staff and their families, reinforcing its position as an organization that deeply values the lives and well-being of its employees and the wider community it serves.
