Fiji Rugby Union CEO, John O’Connor says it was endorsed during their Special General Meeting that they need to have a separate sponsor in order to run a separate women’s competition.
He says they had discussions with the sponsors.
O’Connor says concerns were raised about women teams being demoted just because the men’s team failed to make it into the top eight.
He says this has been the case for the Lautoka women’s team which played in the final of the Skipper Cup last year but had to be demoted.
O’Connor says the Macuata team which won the Vodafone Vanua Championship women’s title could not be promoted because the men’s team did not qualify.
