FRIEND has launched a series on organic food systems that will allow people to learn about organic agriculture and the opportunities it might bring.
While speaking at the launch, FRIEND Founder and CEO, Sashi Kiran says they have had a lot of interest from the organic agriculture community in Fiji.
She says there has not been a lot of information readily available and they have been continuously asked to build capacity in this sector.
Kiran says the online series will continue for the next few weeks where they will share experiences from practitioners around the world on why they are engaging in organic agriculture and why it is important for people in Fiji and the Pacific.
The President of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements Karen Mapusua says the word ‘organic’ is not regulated in Fiji and it is something that could be introduced.
Mapusua says for many countries, the word ‘organic’ is regulated by the Government where certain standards need to be met before it is allowed to use the word ‘organic’ on the product.
She adds the first step is consumer education so that people know what they are looking for when they go to buy organic.
