The Fiji Roads Authority has identified a total of 216 Irish crossings that require upgrades.
They say Irish crossings were traditionally designed as low-level structures and to be submerged over-top during heavy rain and storm surges, making them low-level crossing structures.
FRA says the bridge at Raiwaqa, on Kavanagasau road in Sigatoka, is an example of a low-level structure that tends to flood during heavy rain, however, it becomes accessible again as soon as the water recedes.
They say priority will be given to secondary roads, followed by link and local roads which will also be subject to the availability of funds.
FRA further says they will continue to carry out regular maintenance to ensure the functionality and safety of our existing infrastructure.
