The Fiji Public Service Association is calling on the government to review its approach to overseas trips by their Ministers and consider alternative means of obtaining information and participating in international discussions.
This was after concerns were raised about the excessive overseas trips undertaken by the Coalition Government Ministers, which are being perceived as an unnecessary waste of public funds.
The General Secretary of the Fiji Public Service Association, Judith Kotobalavu says it has come to their attention that, recently, nine Ministers, including the Prime Minister and his three Deputy Prime Ministers, were out of the country simultaneously.
Kotobalavu says they believe that such a high number of Ministers attending conferences, symposiums or meetings abroad is avoidable and not in the best interest of the public.
She says while the importance of international engagements and the exchange of ideas is understandable, they firmly believe that attending every conference or meeting is not essential.
She adds in today’s digital age, relevant papers and information can easily be sourced from the organisers or sent by our overseas missions.
Kotobalavu says in some cases, the contribution of Ministers attending such events and the cost associated with their travel, accommodation and related expenses do outweigh the benefits and this could include relying more on the expertise and reports of our overseas missions, which are often underutilised.
She adds by doing so, we can significantly reduce unnecessary expenditure and direct those funds towards critical areas that require attention in our country.
Kotobalavu says the FPSA believes that prudent management of public funds is essential, especially during times when resources are scarce, and there are pressing needs in our communities.
She has called on the coalition government to prioritise transparency and accountability in its decision-making processes regarding overseas travel.
Kotobalavu says it is crucial to demonstrate responsible stewardship and ensure that every expenditure is justified, serving the best interests of the Fijian people.
She says the FPSA are committed to working with the government to find more cost-effective and efficient ways to engage with the international community and contribute to national development.
She further says the government must stop excessive spending on overseas trips so that funds are directed towards the poorest of the poor in our society so that those in need benefit from it and create a more sustainable and inclusive future for all.
