In light of concerns raised by parents on the poor security and surveillance at the Fiji National University hostel at Brown Street in Suva where one of the students was robbed, FNU has enhanced the security level through increased security officers assigned at Hoodless House and continues to monitor the safety of all students by conducting regular patrols in the facility.
In a statement, they say CCTV cameras will also be installed at the halls for added security.
They have also confirmed that they are aware of this matter and have met the student and liaised with the student and the family concerned.
The College has also confirmed that the incident has formally been reported to the Police and they are continuing to liaise closely with the Police on the matter.
The College Dean Dr William May has apologised to all medical students and their parents for this unfortunate situation and will be meeting with all students and their parents to highlight the solutions implemented to address the issue of safety on campus.
Dr May has reassured all students that the University will continue to ensure that the safety of all the students and will remain a priority.
A concerned parent informed fijivillage News that one of the girls from the hostel was robbed at the hostel and this has affected other girls now as they are afraid of going to the washroom at night fearing that they could be robbed or get sexually molested by robbers.
She said students are supposed to feel safe and secure in the place where they go to study.
The college has since provided counselling support to the student and additional sessions are scheduled as required.
They say other students at the hostel can also access their free and confidential counselling services for psychosocial support.
