The defending champs of the FM96 Qiri Kava competition Washington Tin Band retained their title last night walking away with $1,000.
FM96 Programmes Director and Breakfast Show Host, Tony Rahiman says that Washington Tin Band’s passion, commitment and stage presence stood out compared to other finalists.
He says the performances reached a new level this year with some companies already asking if these Qiri Kava groups are available to perform at their Christmas Parties.
Washington Tin Band is from Delainavesi.
There were two groups from the area this year which was Washington Tin Band and Washington Youngsters.
Washington Tin Band Youth Leader, Filipe Maka says the FM96 Qiri Kava competition has given them a sense of purpose and commitment as some of the band members are school leavers.
He says it took them one week to put together their winning routine.
There are 15 members of Washington Tin Band and Maka says everyone did their own little chores around the house and the neighborhood to be able to give 5 dollars each for their transportation.
He says some of the band members are now thinking of going back to school to specifically learn about music.
Maka says the prize money would be used for their break-up party and also their tour in Lautoka.
Washington Youngsters which is the second group from Delainavesi has 13 members and it is mostly made up of primary school students in the area who decided to try and make some money this school holidays.
Four teams competed in the final of the FM96 Qiri Kava competition last night.
They are Washington Tin Band, Washington Youngsters, City of Lights and Percussion.
