Fiji Labour Party Leader Mahendra Chaudhry says their proposal for opposition parties to work towards a grand coalition and contest the elections under one banner could have been done but unfortunately there are parties who think they can do it on their own or need to be there because they have been in existence for a long time and cannot merge with other parties.
When questioned on whether the FLP will field 55 candidates, Chaudhry says they are still going through the process of identifying candidates.
He says they have received 45 applications and more are coming in.
Chaudhry adds they would like more applications and are also head hunting to ensure they have a balanced team.
When asked on what the FLP is doing different as it did not win any seats in the 2014 and 2018 general elections, Chaudhry says the party had a leadership vacuum in the last two elections however he believes they have gotten over that and their supporters are coming back.
Unity Fiji Leader, Savenaca Narube says he sent an invitation to all opposition political parties this morning if they could explore the possibility of working and pulling their resources together.
He confirms they have received in excess of 60 applications and are going through the screening process.
Narube says while elections is a popularity contest, credibility is important.
We have sent questions to FijiFirst General Secretary, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. He is yet to respond.
