The FIJI Water Foundation, one of the largest philanthropic organizations in Fiji, has announced the launch of its groundbreaking “Women in Agriculture Initiative” pilot project.
In partnership with women’s groups from six neighbouring villages within the Yaqara Valley in Ra, this program is designed to optimize unused land and empower local women to actively participate in sustainable farming practices with assistance from the FIJI Water Foundation.
The first phase of this project has been launched with the women’s group at Drauniivi Village.
The Head of Navuso Agricultural Technical Institute and Chairman of the Yaqara Pastoral Company, Uraia Waibuta, says this initiative aims to boost the agricultural skills of the women in the Yaqara Valley region who will in turn, leverage that knowledge to make more informed healthy choices with their families at home.
FIJI Water Foundation Director Semi Lotawa says their vision is to establish a sustainable, women-led agricultural supply chain that provides consistent, quality fresh produce year-round.
Lotawa says as a result, it will bolster the health and economic stability of women in the Yaqara Valley and ensure that future generations have access to nutritious produce.
He says by upskilling these women with agricultural best practices such as crop rotation, climate smart techniques like drip irrigation and a deeper understanding of the seasonal calendar, it will equip them with the critical knowledge and resources to ensure consistent and efficient crop production.
The Foundation Director says currently, the six villages participating in this initiative include Drauniivi, Naseyani, Nananu, Togovere, Narauyaba and Rabulu.
He says every one-acre farm plot will be led by its respective women’s group, who is responsible for planting and cultivating a variety of short and medium to long-term crops.
Lotawa says to ensure a consistent produce market and to promote a healthier lifestyle, the crops will be sold and delivered in vegetable packs fortnightly to more than 300 FIJI Water employees at its Yaqara Plant.
He says ultimately, this community driven program aims to transform the economic landscape for women with the hope that one day, they will operate successful semi-commercial farms and enhance Fiji’s food security.
Waibuta says this is a tremendous training and mentorship opportunity for women, which will no doubt drive positive change in their communities.
He says they are incredibly honoured to work hand-in-hand with the FIJI Water Foundation to build on its extensive philanthropy and ongoing community development efforts.
