The Fiji Electricity Authority has embarked on a contingency plan to conserve water at Monasavu till the rainy season sets in.
Fiji Electricity Authority’s CEO Hasmukh Patel said FEA had to borrow $35 million to activate this plan of procuring and installing 40 megawatts of containerized diesel generating plants at four locations.
Patel said this will mean further financial losses to FEA’s operations as a result of the increase in the monthly fuel bill from around $17.5 million to about $24 million.
FEA requests all its consumers to use electricity wisely.
Meanwhile, Patel said uncontrolled cane fires are the prime cause of damage to the Authority’s wooden poles and such fires cause unwanted power outages.
Patel stressed not to burn cane or rubbish near the FEA power poles.
