A team of Dutch water experts will be working closely with the Ministry of Waterways and Environment in mitigating the consequences of floods in the Ba and Rakiraki catchments.
Climate change along with the changing land use has worsened the flood risks at these two catchments causing tremendous social and economic loss to the country.
Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development, Waterways and Environment, Dr. Mahendra Reddy says that it is now time that they move away from being reactive to flood disasters to actually implementing specific activities aimed at mitigating flood risks.
Dr. Reddy says it is one of their priority to fix this problem and first they need to understand the flood risk factors in the catchments and then devise strategies to mitigate the impacts.
The Dutch DRR team will contribute to understanding the flood risk factors in the Ba and Rakiraki catchments and through informed recommendations that would pave the way forward for a holistic flood management in Fiji.
