Fijian Hindus are joyfully marking the first day of Diwali with Dhanteras, a time for prayers focused on prosperity, health and unity.
Families across the country observe the occasion by purchasing gold, silver and other items considered auspicious, symbolizing fortune and abundance.
Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran emphasized the significance of Dhanteras, coinciding with Ayurveda Day, honoring Lord Dhanvantri, the god of Ayurveda.
She says Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medical system that emphasizes the vital connection between body and mind, aiming to restore balance and promote overall health.
Kiran says indigenous medicine in Fiji also heavily relies on herbal remedies, reflecting a wealth of traditional knowledge.
She says as the community celebrates Diwali, a festival symbolizing the victory of light over darkness, she is urging everyone to reflect on the lessons from their traditions.
She says we must nurture our bodies, hearts and minds; embracing the values of our ancestors to build a peaceful world.
Kiran further says the festivities of Dhanteras kickstart the five-day Diwali celebration, reminding families to come together, express gratitude and seek blessings for health and prosperity in the year ahead.
Meanwhile, Hanuman Jyanti will be celebrated tomorrow, Diwali on Friday, Govardhan Pooja on Saturday and concluding with Bhai Duj on Sunday.
