For the next three months the enforcement officers may be seen at the Suva Bus Stand, directing people to follow the new walk ways and footpaths.
Land Transport Authority spokesperson Iliesa Sokia said they have hired some road volunteers and engaged road marshalls to ensure that people are safe at the Suva Bus Stand.
He said following the three month period, they will review their enforcement process.
Sokia added that a team of enforcement officers is also in the West.
It has been observed that enforcement officers are educating the people on road usage however Sokia said this cannot be done in one night.
Fijivillage has noticed that some people are still seen crossing from anywhere at the bus stand.
This is occurring despite repeated calls by the enforcement officers.
We observed a female student running across from one bus terminal to the other ignoring the call made by the enforcement officer to use the footpath.
On this issue Sokia said there are some notorious pedestrians who beat traffic lights, cross the roads from anywhere and tell off the enforcement officers when they are told to follow road rules.
He said the schools and Ministry of Education should put more emphasis on educating the students on road usage.
Following the death of a 45 year old woman and her three year old daughter in a bus accident at the Suva Bus Stand, the Suva City Council has started upgrading works putting crossing humps and railings.
Enforcement officers are present at all the three terminals, walkways and crossing humps at the Bus Station.
