A 68-year-old man has passed away after he was allegedly assaulted by a man who was heavily intoxicated in Cunningham.
Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations Livai Driu says the man was waiting for the bus along Cunningham Stage 4 with his son, when the suspect confronted the two, resulting in a heated verbal exchanges.
The suspect allegedly punched the victim where he fell unconscious on the road.
ACP Driu says the elderly man was rushed to the Tamavua Health Center where he was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival.
He says a 28-year-old man while being escorted to the Wainibokasi Hospital for a medical check, allegedly damaged the rear glass of a police vehicle.
The suspect was intoxicated during the incident.
While raising concern on the number of alcohol related incidents recorded in the last 24 hours, ACP Driu says the excessive consumption of alcohol has, and will always lead to trouble, and is cautioning members of the public to drink responsibly and in moderation.
He adds the unfortunate incidents serve as a reminder that the excessive consumption of alcohol can lead to a lifetime of regrets, and the suffering of innocent parties.
