Education Takes Big Hit from COVID-19 - Organizations Urged to Take Student Interns

Vatis Communications Chief Executive Officer Arnold Chanel has urged Fijian organizations to remember the thousands of students who are currently unable to attend classes because of COVID-19.

Tertiary institutions and schools are currently on extended breaks as a measure to prevent the spread of the virus.

"The impact is being felt by Fijian students who have to stay at home, but with the technology available to us, combined with companies like Telecom Fiji ensuring that we remain connected, there is no reason organisations cannot pitch in and take on student interns who can work remotely,” said Chanel.

"This will build valuable experience for young Fijians, not only in terms of employment but also increase their adaptability in a rapidly growing technological world at no cost, except maybe a bit of time."

The Vatis CEO has pledged to take on student interns who have a smart device and would like to work completely remotely and gain experience at a professional firm.

"Being a 100% Fijian owned firm, it is very important for us to give back to the community and we will take students on internships for as long as COVID-19 disrupts schools - they must be able to work remotely of course."

"The internship will include regular training on the use of collaborative software such as Discord and Google Enterprise, gaining experience through regular conference calls and provide an opportunity for students to be part of a high-level innovative operation,” Chanel said.

“We hope to set an example for other companies to give back to the community in whatever way they are able.”
