Energy Fiji Limited is currently in the process of trying to purchase a transformer which will cost about $5M including freight and its installation.
This was highlighted by Energy Fiji Limited CEO, Hasmukh Patel while giving an update on the power outage that occurred in parts of the Central and Western Division of Viti Levu on Thursday.
Patel says a power transformer in the Cunningham substation had tripped and gone out of operation though the power was restored within 60 to 90 minutes.
He says international experts carried out tests, and it was revealed that the transformer required extensive repairs which could only be carried out overseas in order to safely restore its operation.
Patel further stated that repairing of the transformer, which weighs 80 tonnes, may take may take as long as December or early January.
Patel says Energy Fiji Limited has already contacted a number of companies in Australia and New Zealand to locate a replacement transformer to remedy the situation as quickly and efficiently as possible.
He says the estimated cost of repairs is as yet unknown as the extent of the damage will need to be assessed first.
