The dredging of the creek near Rakiraki Town could start as early as next month with the hope that this will help deal with the flooding that has affected residents and businesses for years.
This has been confirmed by the Rakiraki Town Council Acting CEO, Tulsi Ram who says the problem is that the creek is shallow and narrow.
A grant of $212,000 has been given by the Ministry of Waterways for this project.
Ram says some of this funding will also help fix the drainage in the town area.
He adds that the planning has already been done and work will start as soon as the council receives the grant in its bank account.
While the funding is set to bring relief to many people, Rakiraki businessman Asmat Ali is hoping that this will not be another false promise by the Council.
He says this is hard to believe as he again had to endure flood waters entering his restaurant on Sunday.
The termination date for all grants given by the Ministry of Waterways is 31st July this year.
It is paid in quarterly installments.
