20-year-old Nakasaleka, Kadavu man, Josua Niu's dream to have his own laptop to support his studies for a Diploma in Electrical Engineering, has come true today today after he won the Tertiary Award during the World GIS Day celebration held at Civic Centre.
Niu, who is a first-year student at the Fiji National University says he was facing challenges while trying to cope with his studies until he saw the poster that there is a laptop to be won in the GIS Competition.
He says created a video that explains the mechanics of a Geographic Information System which is a computer system that analyzes and displays geographically referenced information.
While officiating at the World GIS Day celebration, Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo says GIS emerges as the cornerstone in furnishing his Ministry with the necessary data for shaping the future we all aspire to achieve.
Vosarogo says through this, the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources has pioneered an online state land application portal that facilitates those interested in leasing land by providing an image map of available lots showcasing crucial details such as the location, access roads, neighbouring lots and proximity in water bodies and utilities.
