The Director of Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital in Nasese, Doctor Krupali Tappoo talks about the struggles, successes and the journey for the NGO, Sai Prema Foundation to build a $25 million children’s heart hospital for the children from Fiji and the rest of the South Pacific on a special fijivillage Straight Talk With Vijay Narayan.
It costs upto $100,000 to get a child living with congenital heart disease to get heart surgery and over the years, many children have succumbed to this disease in Fiji due to the backlog of cases and parents unable to pay for the costs to take their children for the much needed surgery overseas.
Many of these children live only for a few years.
Now, many children born with heart defects will get a gift of life after the setting up of the Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital in Suva.
In the past few days, 22 children have had their operations. They are aged between 7 weeks to 13 years. Another 8 children will have their operations soon.
All the operations are free of charge at the children’s heart hospital and the surgery team of volunteers are from around the world.
All the costs are handled through individual donations and volunteer work.
The land where the hospital is built on is donated by the Fijian Government.
