Diwali is more than a festive occasion — it's a living testament to the enduring legacy of the Girmit era.
This was highlighted by Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Dr. Ram Raju who says Diwali represents Fiji’s unique multicultural identity, reflecting the spirit and sacrifices of those who arrived during the Indenture System era.
Dr. Raju says the celebration transcends religious boundaries, as Fijians of all faiths embrace the festival by lighting diyas, sharing sweets and extending wishes of peace, harmony and goodwill.
He says Diwali in Fiji carries special historical significance, rooted in the arrival of over 60,000 Indian labourers between 1879 and 1916 under the Indenture System.
He says their contributions have shaped Fiji’s multicultural society and the festival honors this legacy of resilience and unity.
He further says Diwali became a public holiday in 1974, a milestone declared by Fiji’s first Prime Minister, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara to recognize the contributions of the Indian community to Fiji’s heritage.
Dr. Raju calls on Fijians to come together in the true spirit of Diwali, honoring the festival as a symbol of hope, tolerance and unity across diverse communities.
