Hundreds gathered at the Kshatriya Hall last night to celebrate the 2023 Diwali Utsav organised by the High Commission of India under the India-Fiji Friendship Forum.
The Diwali Utsav was a fun night where many cultural performances, traditional dress contests and songs were presented to celebrate the upcoming festive of lights.
While delivering his speech, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says Diwali is a beacon of unity and friendship that is developed every year between different ethnicities and a celebration this big is the evidence of togetherness.
The Prime Minister says he will be amongst many who will be celebrating the victory of light over darkness and victory of good over evil as it is a time of reunion with our loved ones.
He says Fiji has a great relationship with India and has profound connections, and their diplomatic ties have been tested over the years and have proven to be strong.
He says Diwali shows provide a platform for talented young people to showcase their leadership and cultural skills and he also encourage them to continue doing better things in life.
Rabuka says they have given an early gift to the sugarcane farmers by paying them before the festive season so that they can celebrate happiness with their friends and families on Diwali.
The Prime Minister highlighted that Diwali is no longer confined to one religion or culture as it has evolved into an international celebration, symbolising hope and prosperity.
He further says in Fiji, Diwali has seamlessly woven itself into Fiji's social fabric, and over the years, this celebration has become an integral part of our nation's cultural landscape.
He adds it is the time when our Indian neighbours, friends and even strangers open their hearts and share the delightful Indian sweets and treats that define this festive occasion.
Diwali will be celebrated on the 13th of this month.
