Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa says Diwali is a reminder that it is everyone's responsibility to look out for each other and see beyond gender, race, religion, age, abilities, and status and do what is right.
She says the spirit of Diwali is not for those three days that people engage in the Diwali rituals.
She made these comments during the Diwali celebration at the Ba Senior Citizen Home in Namosau, Ba this morning.
She says today’s gathering is even more special because senior citizens are in the centre of it.
Vuniwaqa says senior citizens are an asset to their families, communities and society and their contribution as carers, advisers, mediators, mentors, and breadwinners is invaluable, but frequently unrecognized.
Vuniwaqa adds the story of Diwali highlights, family unity, togetherness, good values and loving one another.
She adds that these traits are what make a complete, fulfilling life; and Diwali gives the opportunity to reiterate the importance of treating elders with the respect, love, and compassion that they deserve by rewinding the journey of Lord Rama that began from a noble, selfless and obedient honor of his father’s promise.
