Disaster operations for the Lautoka and Yasawa Districts have been boosted with the opening of a revamped Emergency Operations Centre.
While opening the centre, Permanent Secretary for Rural and Maritime Development Meleti Bainimarama says while specific risks will continue to increase and threaten our country in the future, the refurbishment of the Lautoka/Yasawa Emergency Operation Centre is necessary and timely as well.
He says this centre is the central command and control facility responsible for carrying out the principles of emergency preparedness and emergency management functions for Lautoka/Yasawa district during emergencies.
Bainimarama adds it will also be responsible for operational decisions in the district and at the same time collecting, gathering, analyzing data; and making decision that protects life and property, maintain continuity of the office within the bound of the applicable laws of Fiji, and disseminate information and decisions that are vital to all concerned agencies, communities and individuals for their survival.
He expressed gratitude to the European Union’s Building Safety and Resilience in the Pacific program for investing $49,500 into the centre..
Work is currently underway for the refurbishment of Sigatoka emergency operation centre.
