A huge controversy and disaster is brewing at the athletics track in Paris after Jamaican sprint legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce missed the women's 100m semi-finals, reportedly due to a late rule change.
Fraser-Pryce, the winner of eight Olympic medals, was a shock absentee when the runners in the second semi-final made their way to the starting blocks.
While there was immediately speculation that she had picked up an injury, Nine commentator Gerard Whateley says a late change to how athletes are allowed to access the track and field facilities appeared to be the culprit.
There has been a rule change in the warm-up area and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has fallen on the wrong side of it.
She has been denied entry rather than withdrawing it seems as though there is video evidence of her pleading her case to get in.
Whateley says this is a disaster for Paris, if that turns out to be the case, if there is something that's changed between yesterday and today ahead of the semi-finals and the greatest ever female sprinter has been denied access to the stadium to compete in a semi-final.
Fraser-Pryce is still listed to run in Jamaica's 4x100m relay team, making an injury-forced withdrawal unlikely.
St. Lucia’s Julien Alfred has surprised the world by beating the favourites to win the Olympic women's 100-metres title at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Alfred won St. Lucia's first-ever medalist at the Games.
As the rain teemed down at a raucous Stade de France, Alfred dominated the final and took victory by a clear margin with a national record of 10.72 seconds.
American world champion Sha'Carri Richardson took silver in a time of 10.87 seconds, with compatriot Melissa Jefferson finishing third with a time of 10.92.
