Disability does not stop you from achieving success as 18-year-old Irene Mar says she has continued to prove that by trying to reach greater heights in sports.
Originally from Nukusa village in Macuata, Mar was determined to achieve the impossible and stamp her mark in the sport of Taekwondo.
Mar says she fought hard to come out of her comfort zone and with the support she received from her parents and her coach, she was comfortable in participating alongside her Taekwondo teammates.
She says she was inspired by her coach to take up the sport as she used to watch her father, who was once also a Taekwondo athlete.
The 18-year-old says she has been competing against athletes and has won gold medals - the recent one was during the Ambassadors Cup that was held in Fiji.
Mar is currently in the Solomon Islands with three other Team Fiji Taekwondo athletes attending a two-week training camp funded by the World Taekwondo Association.
The former MGM High School student says she is looking forward to learning as much as she can and developing her skills from this training camp.
Mar adds she is also confident that she can qualify for the Olympics this year and she will do all she can to achieve her goal.
Meanwhile, team Fiji Taekwondo will be participating in an Olympics qualifier in April this year as they try to create history by qualifying for the Olympics for the first time ever.
