Despite a series of serious injuries, Waisea Nacuqu always knew that he had to work hard to achieve his goal of representing Fiji in the Olympics and to win gold.

The Olympic gold medalist says the biggest injury blow that he suffered was in 2019 when he injured his collar bone during the Las Vegas 7s.

He further says he was told by doctors that he will not be able to play for the rest of the year.

Nacuqu missed the Hong Kong and Singapore 7’s that year but was able to return for the last leg as he continued to train and push forward.

Nacuqu adds that at one point during their training for the Olympic Games in Tokyo, all the players had wanted to give up as they were missing their families so much.

He says being away from their families had taken a toll on some players and they wanted to abandon this mission.

Nacuqu says they are so blessed to have a captain and a management team who continued encouraging them and advising them on what the task ahead will mean to the nation and their families.

He says he cannot wait to return home to celebrate with his family.

Nacuqu and the rest of the team are currently in quarantine.

They will be reunited with their family at the end of the week.
