Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has revealed in a video on his official Telegram account that a date for an invasion into Rafah, where an estimated 1.5 million Palestinians are sheltering, has been set.
Netanyahu did not disclose a date but says entry into Rafah is necessary for a complete victory over Hamas.
This comes after Israeli forces withdrew from Khan Younis in southern Gaza.
Videos show that Palestinians who were forced to leave Khan Younis by Israel’s military offensive found their neighbourhoods in ruins as they returned to the area and much of the city was bulldozed after months of heavy fighting and Israeli bombardment.
Reports say that negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Cairo to reach a ceasefire and hostage deal achieved significant progress and consensus on many controversial points.
An Israeli official says plans for aid to enter Gaza via the Erez crossing for the first time in six months have been delayed.
The official says Israel approved the checkpoint's reopening last week after pressure from the United States.
