Crimes occur within communities, therefore the solution to crimes lie within the communities.
Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew highlighted this to the 2024 Festive Ops Stakeholders Workshop and Briefing at the Tanoa Plaza this morning.
Chew says they have consistently said this in the hope of gaining support in working together for safer communities.
He says policing is reliant on partnership as they cannot fight crime alone and therefore opportunities to engage such as this is welcome.
The Acting Commissioner says while there is engagement at divisional and district level, there is a need to look at how they can consolidate efforts towards shared commitment of serving our communities better.
He says there are two main drivers of crime, economic and emotional.
Chew says as police officers they are trained to detect, investigate, and at times prosecute crimes.
He says the complexities of the criminal landscape has meant that they simply just cannot sit back and wait for reports to be received but need to continuously explore avenues to nip the problem in the bud before it becomes too problematic and this is where they come in as members of friendly forces and also stakeholders in the service industry, interacting with members of the community although it may be in a different context.
Chew says the stakeholders contribution will assist operations with the conduct of their targeted festive seasons operations.
He adds they too are members of the same communities, and are working hard to make it safe for all.
