The controversial speech made by Reverend Iliesa Naivalu at a public debate earlier this month has been reviewed by the Methodist Church in Fiji.

General Secretary Reverend Dr. Epineri Vakadewavosa has obtained a copy of Reverend Naivalu’s speech and said they will now have to formalise a meeting to have further discussions.

He said Reverend Naivalu had the freedom to voice his opinion at the debate.

Reverend Naivalu who is the Secretary of the Department of Christian Citizenship and Social Services made the comments as a panelist at the Speaker's debate organised by the Parliament of Fiji.

The debate was focused on violence against women and girls.

Naivalu stated in his opening remarks at the debate that there is no use in increasing court sentences for perpetrators of violence against women and girls, as it does not work.

He also said human beings are sinful in nature and women including girls need to be educated on the physical, mental and emotional state of men.

Naivalu had also made reference to the need for women to wear something decent when they are in an isolated place or among men.

The Methodist Church in Fiji had stated that Naivalu’s comments do not articulate their stand on gender‑based violence and gender equality.

The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre and the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement have both condemned Reverend Naivalu’s comments.
