Students teachers of Lekutu District School and Lekutu Secondary School will soon have new classroom blocks and teachers quarters following the ground breaking ceremony of the new structures.
The Australian government is completely funding the $5.1 million construction at Lekutu Secondary and $4.1 million at Lekutu District School.
Construction at Lekutu Secondary includes 5 teachers quarters, a dining hall, kitchen, boys and girls dormitory, bathroom block, sickbay and rehabilitation of the administration block while two teachers quarters, dining hall, kitchen, boys and girls dormitory, bathroom block, library and a computer lab were damaged at the Lekutu District School.
While officiating at the ground breaking ceremony, Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro says 2 dormitory buildings, 2 staff quarters, the library building and the school office rooftop and a classroom building wall were damaged during Tropical Cyclones Yasa and Ana in December 2020 and January 2021 respectively.
He says the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade stepped in and provided much items to allow teaching and learning to continue in both the schools.
Radrodro says these items include tents, building materials, portable generator, books and educational materials.
He says the new structures will be OHS compliant and will be able to withstand category 5 cyclones.
The Education Minister further says the $40 million support by the Australian government to assist with the infrastructure rehabilitation following TC Yasa and Ana is indeed noteworthy.
He says the recovery program under the Vuvale Partnership between Australia and Fiji has assisted 9 schools in Vanua Levu.
