39-year-old Congo National, Kiala Henry Lusaka who is alleged to have murdered his wife in Suva has told the Suva High Court that he will represent himself.
Lusaka allegedly murdered his 44-year-old Australian wife on 23rd July at Service Street in Suva.
High Court Judge Justice Daniel Goundar then asked Lusaka whether he has any qualifications to represent himself.
Lusaka told the court that he can’t understand English and can only understand French, Portuguese and Spanish.
Justice Goundar has given the State time to explore options whether they can translate the disclosures in French language to ensure right to fair trial.
The court will later decide whether Lusaka can represent himself or whether he will have to look for a lawyer to represent himself.
The case has been adjourned to the 31st next month.
Lusaka has been further remanded in custody.
