The Public Accounts Committee in its latest report on the Economic Services Sector 2004 has raised serious concern that the Ministry of Agriculture failed to recover $45,891 which was allegedly misappropriated by a clerical officer.
Committee member, Taufa Vakatale said wage reconciliations for 2004 were not prepared by the Headquarters and the Divisions which resulted in the lack of detection of misuse of funds.
According to Vakatale, the Ministry suspended the officer on 50% salary and her contract was later terminated by the PSC.
However the matter was not reported to Police and no steps were taken to recover the money.
The committee said the case was one of embezzlement and warranted dismissal as well as a court case.
