The lack of consistency in the communication system is a major challenge for Nukuni villages on Ono Levu Island in the Lau Group, as it is a key hindrance to the well-being and development of communities.
Nukuni Village headman Mesake Jale highlighted this during the National Development Plan public consultation at Nukuni Village Hall.
He says they are one of the most distant maritime communities in the country, and consistent communication is key in their daily lives in cases of emergency, to convey urgent messages to their families and relevant authorities on the mainland.
Jale adds that having a consistent communication system will also assist them in being aware of the correct time for the boat schedules.
He says their village landline which has been down for months, has just been fixed recently, and they are requesting if the Government can look into this because this is key to the well-being of people on the island and in development.
The villagers also raised the need for Police presence on the island and improvement in franchise fares and services.
A team from the Ministry of Health also conducted outreach services on Ono Island, carrying out dental, reproductive health, physiotherapy, eye and ear clinics, pharmaceutical services, peer education, and general health, and a team conducted the maintenance of health facilities.
68-year-old Laisani Ledua of Nukuni Village says the visit by the Health Ministry is much appreciated, and they are grateful to the Government and its officials for bringing such services closer to their doorsteps and enlightening them on how to live healthier lifestyles.
