The New Zealand team have been hit by their first case of COVID-19 at the Commonwealth Games, with one athlete isolating after testing positive on arrival in Birmingham.
New Zealand chef de mission Nigel Avery says the male athlete was asymptomatic and is being monitored at an isolation hotel, and there was no indication that his involvement in the Games was in doubt.
With the United Kingdom having eliminated protocols aimed to stop the spread of the virus, the medical committee's monitoring is more about the athlete's well-being and their ability to compete at their best, with different sports requiring different energy systems.
The Commonwealth Games will start this Friday.
