Vunaniu Village in Serua is heavily affected by coastal erosion and sea water intrusion.
Locally Managed Marine Area Network Fiji Program Coordinator, Inoke Tuiwainunu highlighted this to fijivillage News saying this is why they have started mangrove planting with the villagers.
Tuiwainunu says they are embarking on a Sautu Program Initiative which follows a ridge to reef concept in conserving and restoring what has been lost as a result of climate change and economic activity.
He says they are funded by Canada Fund for Local Initiative and are procuring more mangrove seedlings.
The Program Coordinator says they have planted over 3,000 mangrove plants over the past few weeks and will be assessing the survival rate of the ones that they have planted on a weekly basis.
He says they also have a nursery for the mangrove seedlings and other plants.
