Christchurch mosque shooter Brenton Tarrant who killed 51 people including 3 Fijians has been sentenced to life imprisonment without parole this afternoon.
This means that he will never be freed from jail and it is the first time in New Zealand history this sentence has been imposed.
Fijians Asraf Ali, Imam Hafiz Musa Patel and Ashraf Ali who moved to New Zealand years ago passed away in the attacks.
While sentencing the man, Judge Cameron Mander told Tarrant that he is empty of any empathy for the victims and described the gunman as a deeply impaired person motivated by a base hatred of people he perceives to be different.
Judge Mander says Tarrant is entirely self-absorbed and has offered no apology or acknowledgement of the harm he caused.
The 29-year-old Australian had earlier pleaded guilty to 51 counts of murder, 40 attempted murders and one charge of terrorism.
