15 new lawyers have been reminded by Chief Justice Salesi Temo that there are no shortcuts in the courtroom and they have a duty not only to the court and their clients, but also to work diligently on behalf of themselves, their colleagues, and the people of the nation.
Students from the Fiji National University were formally admitted to the Bar before Chief Justice Temo at the High Court this morning, marking a proud and memorable occasion for many families.
These students presented their applications for admission as legal practitioners following the successful completion of their Bachelor of Laws and Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.
In his address during the ceremony, Chief Justice Temo acknowledged the students' hard work, dedication, and sacrifices, and reminded them of their responsibilities to the public and the judicial system.
He says admission as a barrister and solicitor signifies the beginning of a new chapter in their professional lives.
He says their degree at this level only gives them the key to open the door to the practical world of legal practice and while they walk, they will be challenged in the practice of law.
Justice Temo has further underlined the importance of adhering to the legal code of ethics.
He says as emerging members of the legal community, they represent the future of Fiji’s legal profession, and it is essential that they practise law with honesty and courage in the defence of their clients.
